Hybrid PCB
A hybrid PCB is a multilayer printed circuit board, which has dissimilar material for each layer. With the right combination of substrates, the reliability of hybrid PCBs increases many folds. In fact, different substrate materials which have different dielectric quotients, different coefficients of thermal expansion improve the electrical performance of the PCB. With its improved system reliability and optimized electrical performance, these boards are focused towards high-frequency RF applications.
materials utilized in the fabrication of hybrid pcb
Typically, a hybrid PCB could use a mix of FR-4 material with high frequency PTFE material.
PTFE
PTFE material is a ceramic-filled plastics used for fabricating high-frequency PCBs. It is suitable for applications that require improved impedance control and low signal loss.
FR-4
FR-4 is a commonly used material in the fabrication of a printed circuit board. Flame Retardant and low on costs, it is known for its electrical insulation & high dielectric strength. Additionally, it can also withstand moisture & a varying temperature range.
Polyimide
This material is known for its high chemical resistance as also its great electrical properties. Additionally, the material is lightweight and flexible. However, polyimide is more expensive when compared to PTFE & FR-4.
Often PTFE and FR-4 are utilized in designing hybrid PCBs. PTFE laminates work well for high-speed functions while FR-4 is preferred for low-speed applications. FR-4 can also be helpful in balancing the thickness issues for the layers of these laminates.
Challenges to consider when designing Hybrid PCBs
Some of the aspects to consider when designing hybrid PCB is to understand that each material has a different CTE value. This can have issues as when one laminate expands, the other may shrink. It is, therefore, important to ensure proper layer separation when fabricating multilayered hybrid PCBs. Another issue to be tackled includes delamination, for which knowing the period of delamination for materials is extremely important. Depending on the type of material, the adhesive system utilized for hybrid circuit board also varies.
It is important therefore to go with a company that has the necessary experience and expertise in designing and fabricating hybrid boards. At Technotronix, we offer you high-quality hybrid PCBs to meet your bespoke requirements.
