SMT Stencils

PCB SMT stencils got a whole new name for precision printed circuit board assembly services. SMT stencils or surface mount technology stencils are invaluable tools when it comes to PCB production. It ensures that the solder paste that is printed onto the component pads of the PCB is applied with precision. Simply put, stencils consist of a foil that is laser cut to correspond with the places where surface mount devices will go on the board. Once the stencil is cut, you can apply the solder paste over the designated openings. Trying to apply the soldering paste without an SMT stencil can lead to:

  • Consumption of a lot of time
  • Lack of precision and consistency
  • Chances of error

Besides applying solder paste by hand can also lead to:

  • Short circuits
  • Lacuna in the soldering process and more

Surface Mount Technology Stencils Capabilities

It is absolutely imperative that the SMT stencil be perfect so that your assembly line isn’t impacted. At Technotronix, we use the latest technology and have extremely experienced and trained staff. Our use of SMT stencils allows us to deposit solder paste accurately so that the components are positioned correctly during placement. We use a wide variety of SMT stencils based on the method of manufacturing, application of solder paste and material used for construction.
Below is an overview of various type and our capabilities of providing SMT stencils:

Framed SMT Stencils

These are laser-cut stencils that are mounted on a frame. They are used for high volume screen printing on PCBs. They are particularly known for their smooth aperture walls and are extensively used for Micro BGA’s.

Frameless SMT Stencils

Popularly also called foils, these are laser cut stencils. The big advantage with them is that they do not need to be permanently glued to the frame.

Prototype SMT Stencils

These stencils are custom-made from Gerber or CAD files to correspond to the prototype PCBs. They are particularly helpful for manual printing.

Electroformed SMT Stencils

These are nickel-based foils that are mounted in a stencil frame with a mesh border.

Benefits of PCB SMT Stencils

There are many benefits of SMT stencils, key among them being:

  • They ensure even applying of solder paste.
  • They allow the application of the paste all at once to the entire printed circuit boards.
  • They reduce the time and labor required to assemble PCBs.
  • They help reduce defects and errors.
  • They guarantee accuracy and consistency.

Application of Printed Circuit Board SMT Stencils

Stencil printing is one of the most critical steps in the success of the entire SMT assembly line. Little surprise then that professional PCB manufacturers use SMT PCB stencils for board assembly extensively. It is possible to choose from a variety of stencil types and sizes to meet your bespoke requirements.

SMT Stencils FAQs

Simply put, an SMT stencil or a Surface Mount Technology Stencil consists of a foil that is laser cut to correspond with the places where surface mount devices will go on the board. It helps apply the solder paste evenly and accurately.

Most importantly they ensure even application of solder paste, thereby reducing defects and errors. If SMT stencils aren’t used, among other things you tend to stand the risk of short circuits.

We use a wide range depending on bespoke requirements. These could be framed stencils, frameless stencils, prototype stencils and more.

Since they allow for accurate application of solder paste as also application of the paste all at once to the entire board, they reduce the time and labor required to assemble PCBs

With accurate application of solder paste components SMT stencils ensure proper positioning of components on the board, thereby significantly reducing chances of any errors.
